I’ve had several friends and family members tell me they have been reading, and one reader even sent me an email (thank you Walter). The paper has also received at least one letter to the editor from a reader that enjoys the new feature. One of the comments I hear is that it’s “interesting.” Well there’s an old saying about different strokes for different folks, and it occurs to me that the things I find interesting might not interest everyone. So here’s your chance to speak up. Continue reading

We Should Be All About Thanksgiving

November 8, 2015     |     text: 1 Thessalonians 5:12-22

Please and thank you are magic words. Did we all learn that rule as children? My wife often says “You attract more flies with honey than vinegar.” The meaning is that a kind word or soft tone will get better results when asking for something than a demand with a sharp tone. Please and thank you may work wonders, but they’re not exactly magic. Praying God’s will and offering praise from a thankful heart, now that’s how to really make things happen.

Christians disagree about Halloween. Some point to the Christian roots of it. The word Halloween is a combination of Hallows Eve, the day before All Saints Day. Unless you’re Catholic you’re probably not celebrating All Saints Day, if you even know what that is. Even if we think of Halloween and All Saints Day as rooted in Christianity, there are definitely pagan elements in the traditions as well, not to mention what our culture has done to it in recent years. Some Christians defend it, others decry it, while most people probably have a good time and don’t care about the historic origins or whether it’s Christian or not.

Not all Christians agree on Christmas. The very name for the holiday is literally Christ’s Mass and its origins in Roman Catholicism are hard to miss. There is no biblical mandate to celebrate the birth of Christ and some Christians are very concerned about only doing the exact things the Bible instructs us to. The incarnation is a high point in the hope of the human race but the birth of Jesus is merely the first step on the road to the cross. The centerpiece of Christ’s life and ministry is the death, burial and resurrection. That’s what Peter preached on the day of Pentecost, not about wise men and manger scenes. Others would be fine with the Christmas they remember from childhood but not with the Holiday Season that begins in mid-October and runs through New Year’s Day, brought to you by our corporate overlords in the name of commercial profitability. I would like to suggest Advent as a Christian alternative to the commercialized American holiday, and will do that in two weeks.

We should be all about thanksgiving.

Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise!  (Psalm 100:4)  Every good and every perfect gift is from above… (James 1:17)  For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, for it is made holy by the word of God and prayer. (1 Timothy 4:4-5)

The Bible is perfectly clear – we are totally without hope on our own. We are warned not to trust our own might or understanding. God feeds the tiniest sparrow (Matthew 6) and we are worth much more to God than that. He gives us life and feeds us by his hand.  There is much to be thankful for. Even in a recession we live in the most prosperous and productive nation in the world. We are abundantly, overly blessed. And lest we feel we worked hard for that, consider where the health came from to do that work. If you have a strong back or a sharp mind, give thanks to God for those things.

It doesn’t have to be only one particular Thursday each year but this certainly gives believers an opportunity. Only a handful of nations have a Thanksgiving holiday and we should embrace the occasion to give worshipful thanks to our creator God. If one is giving thanks it stands to reason that someone very specific is meant to receive that thanks. In our culture that is no longer the case. We can generally to be thankful for things while recognizing on one (or no deity) in particular. Thanks just sort of goes out into the universe in some form of positive energy. We as believers can very deliberate in giving thanks and intentional about to whom thanks is given. I would hope believers in particular would wait until after Thanksgiving Day to turn on the twinkling lights, but maybe that’s one of my lost causes. I don’t know how much Christ is left in Christmas. But let’s do all we can to keep the thanks in Thanksgiving.

Peace and God bless.

Salt of the Earth, Light of the World

November 1, 2015     |     text: Matthew 5:13-16

Salt and light. I thought to myself “Surely I’ve preached on this before.” I looked back through the archives of the church website. I mentioned it in a newspaper article just two weeks ago; but that was in the paper, not in the pulpit. I found a reference to Matthew 5:16 in a sermon back in June. It was an item in a list of things Christians are to called to; the sermon text was from 2 Peter. So if I preached a salt of the earth/ light of the world sermon at this church it hasn’t been in the last six months. And it’s kind of important so let’s look at this command of Jesus together.

You are the salt of the earth. Some facts about salt:   Continue reading

Christians and Halloween

Originally published in The Calhoun Times October 24, 2015

Screenshot 2015-09-23 at 2.19.54 PM - EditedAnytime I am asked a direct question in the form of “What do Christians believe about (fill in the blank)?” I say it depends on which Christians you ask. Some Christians do not drink alcohol while others have no problem with it. The same is true with dancing, celebrating Christmas, praying to Mary, joining the army and even voting. I can tell you what my family does at our house and, generally speaking, what we believe as a church congregation. Unless you live in my house or join the church I pastor, I am really in no position to say what you should or shouldn’t do on Halloween. But I am a newspaper columnist so if you’re interested I will share my opinion. Continue reading

The Bible Tells One Story

Originally Published in The Calhoun Times Saturday, October 17th

When the Judaizers came behind the Apostle Paul in Galatia, many new Christian believers were persuaded to add circumcision and law-keeping to the Gospel they had received. To set them straight again, Paul argued theology from the Old Testament. In Galatians chapter 3, Paul goes back to promises made to Abraham. While the Judaizers were talking about the Law, Paul went back to the promise. In Genesis 12, and again in Genesis 15, God promised Abraham that he would be the father of nations, that his descendants would be innumerable, and that through him all nations of the world would be blessed. Abraham lived hundreds of years before the Law was given to Moses. Before the Law, the temple and the high priests, Abraham believed God (Gen 15:6) and God counted it to him as righteousness. It is a matter of faith and not keeping the Law the makes one right with God. Continue reading

Standing on the Promise

October 25, 2015     |     text: Galatians 3:1-14

Paul wrote his letter to the Galatain churches to address a crisis; after he had been there and preached the Gospel, which many received, a group of Jewish Christians identified as “the Judaizers” had come behind him and corrupted the Gospel message. They taught the new Christians of Galatia that in addition to receiving Christ they needed to be circumcised and keep the Law. Paul considers their version of the Gospel to not be the Gospel at all. The point of the entire letter is that salvation through Jesus Christ is sufficient. To make his case in chapter 3 Paul goes back to a time before the Law was given to Moses to when the promise was made to Abraham. Continue reading

What is the Gospel?

Originally published in The Calhoun Times October 11, 2015

Screenshot 2015-09-23 at 2.19.54 PM - EditedThe short answer is “good news.” Gospel is a Greek word that was transliterated into English Bibles. Instead of translating the word we just use the Greek word and learn its meaning. For Christians of course it always refers to  the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The gospel message is that Jesus came to seek and to save that which was lost. In Mark chapter 1 Jesus began his public ministry, preaching in Galilee “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.” Continue reading

Gideon Sunday

We will have a Gideon speaker on Sunday, October 18th. If he speaks 10 or 15 minutes I will be prepared to offer a few comments on Colossians 3:1-4. If he speaks 20 minutes or longer I will wait until our next service to preach a full sermon. It’s all God’s time.

Screenshot 2015-10-15 at 10.23.57 AMThe Gideons are not a Southern Baptist thing or sent by any particular denomination. Their organization exists for one unique purpose: to print and distribute Bibles. Every dollar donated to them is used to print Bibles. Each Gideon is a lay Christian businessman or professional from the community that pays his own way. Your donation does not compensate anyone for their time, travel expenses or business overhead. Every $5 they receive produces one hard-cover full copy of the Bible. Full size Bibles go into hotel and hospital rooms. New Testament Bibles with the Psalms and Proverbs are handed out to middle and high school age students, college students, military personnel, health care professionals and others.

Here is a link to the Gideon’s website. Prayerfully consider giving, and join us this Sunday morning to hear about what God is doing. The fields are white unto harvest, and as always the laborers are few.

Who is Clark Bunch?

Originally published in The Calhoun Times October 3, 2015.

Screenshot 2015-09-23 at 2.19.54 PM - EditedSo did you pick up the Saturday paper a few weeks ago and find a new column written by a guy you don’t know that pastors a church you’ve never heard of? If so, here’s the short version of my history and personal testimony.

I can’t say that I have lived in Calhoun my whole life… but real close to it. I remember shopping at places like TG&Y and Super D before we had Walmart or K-Mart. I remember Big Star on West Line, Johnny’s Restaurant on Hwy 41 and all four locations of Pete’s Music City. But in my experience people either remember those things also or else don’t want to hear about it. So more to the point, I grew up in church. Continue reading
