God Is In the Manger

The shepherds bow and worship, the magi present their gifts, perhaps Mary rocks her baby in her arms, or else Mary and Joseph simply admire him. It’s unlikely, even at a live nativity, that they have an actual newborn present. The “baby Jesus” might be a toddler, or even an infant, but you wouldn’t want to keep a real baby out in the cold for very long. Even a live nativity scene will often use a doll or just pretend there is a babe wrapped up in the swaddling clothes lying in the manger. Contrast that scene with the night Jesus was born. Advent Joy

December 13, 2015     |     text: Luke 2:8-20

advent candlesI had a high school biology teacher that believed science was all about vocabulary. If you could define the terms you were most of the way to understanding the science so we started each week with a list of terms and definitions and ended each week with a quiz on those terms. When I taught history my students defined terms and names for each section of the text but that’s not usually how I like to start to a sermon. Today is the third week of Advent and in this case a look at some dictionary definitions might do us some good.

The angels brought the shepherds good news; that’s the Gospel! They brought good news of great joy. Miriam-Webster.com defines joy three ways: Continue reading

Rethinking the Wise Men

Published in The Calhoun Times Saturday December 5th.

Screenshot 2015-09-23 at 2.19.54 PM - EditedLast week we took a look at Christmas Card theology and compared popular notions about angels to what is recorded in scripture. We decided the heavenly host looks more like an army going into battle than a church choir singing hymns. Let’s turn our attention this week to the wise men. Continue reading

Rethinking the Angelic Choir

Published in The Calhoun Times Saturday, November 28th

Screenshot 2015-09-23 at 2.19.54 PM - EditedThink about all the Christmas cards you receive each year. Imagine for a moment that everything we knew about Christmas was based on the images pictured on those cards. I call that Christmas card theology. Many of the cards feature snowflakes or Santa Claus but even the religious ones create a certain mythology. A study of those cards suggests that Jesus was born in a small stable made of wooden boards, he had a full head of blonde hair, there were a few shepherds present and exactly three wise men. I’m not suggesting that we should stop sending Christmas cards with popular art. But in addition to our cards and carols, I would like us to look into scripture and reconsider some of these scenes. Continue reading

Advent Faith

advent candlesDecember 6, 2015
text: Luke 1:26-38, Matthew 1:18-25

The theme of last week was Hope and we lit the Prophet’s candle in our Advent wreath. This week our theme is Faith and we light the Bethlehem candle.

It took great faith to make the journey to Bethlehem. I want to draw your attention to two verses, Luke 1:38 and Matthew 1:24. After Gabriel delivers God’s message to Mary her response is that she is the servant of the Lord, adding “let it be to me according to your word.” After Joseph is told to take Mary as his wife, despite the fact she is already with child, he did as the angel commanded. The message and the circumstances were extraordinary but Joseph and Mary responded together in faith. We don’t know what their respectively families must have thought or said about their situation. We wouldn’t think twice today about meeting a single mother; our culture is about to the point that marriage is frowned upon. But think about first century Israel. Joseph was going to very discreetly get a divorce and not make a public example out of Mary. He could have taken before the city elders and had her stoned to death! That would have been normal in their society. Regardless of the looks, the talk behind their backs and what have you, they proceeded to follow God’s instructions. On top of everything else they were about to make a long journey with an expectant mother who was nine months along. Then when they got there… they couldn’t find a room.  Continue reading

Advent Hope

November 29, 2015     |     text: Isaiah 40:1-5

Why does Charlie Brown even try to kick the football? He knows exactly what will happen when he does; Lucy will pull it away and he will fly through the air landing flat on his back. He has no reasonable expectation this time will be any different because of all the times in past Lucy has let him down.

We learn from past experience. Charlie Brown just keeps trying, but remember the boy who cried wolf? There came a point where no one listened anymore even when there was real danger. He had lost his credibility. On the other hand, think about Honest Abe and Old Faithful; reliability became a part of their identification. When someone proves to be trustworthy time after time, there is no reason to doubt their word. That’s why we read the words of prophecy during Advent. Looking at prophecy and its fulfillment reminds and encourages us that God is always faithful concerning his promises. Continue reading

May I Suggest Advent?

There are some things about the celebration of Christmas in our culture today that I’m not particularly fond of. I don’t like the three month Christmas season that begins in October and stretches through New Year’s Day. I don’t like the Black Friday sales that start before Thanksgiving is over. So if, like many of us, you are disheartened by what Christmas has turned into I would like to suggest an alternative. Let the kids have their claymation specials, let the malls have their Santas, and let the public schools do whatever it is they do. Keeping Christ in Christmas would be nice but I don’t think we can put him back into anything he is already missing from. I would like to tell you about Advent. Continue reading

Lessons in the Waiting

November 22, 2015     |     text: Genesis 12:1-3, 15:12-16

Screenshot 2015-11-19 at 10.29.59 AMWhen I was in the seventh grade I read The Red Pony by John Steinbeck. The main character in that story, Jody Tiflin, was 12 years old when he was given a shotgun for his birthday. The catch was that he would not be given shells until his 13th birthday. He would have to demonstrate to his father that was responsible enough to take care of that firearm for one year before he would ever be allowed to use it. I cannot imagine my dad putting me through something like that but Steinbeck wrote in a different time and maybe Jody didn’t have ADHD. The objective for Jody was to demonstrate that he had learned some lessons about safety and responsibility during the ensuing year. There were lessons in the waiting. Let’s look at Genesis 12 and 15. Give Thanks

Please and thank you are magic words. Did we all learn that rule as children? My wife often says “You attract more flies with honey than vinegar.” She means that a kind word or soft tone will get better results when asking for something than a demand with a sharp tone. Please and thank you may work wonders, but they’re not exactly magic. Praying God’s will and offering praise from a thankful heart, now that’s how to really make things happen. Continue reading

Apologetics 101

Originally published in The Calhoun Times Saturday, November 7, 2015

Screenshot 2015-09-23 at 2.19.54 PM - EditedThe word apologetics may look like the word apology, but apologists are neither sorry nor have they done anything wrong. A Christian apologist is prepared to defend the Gospel and explain why we believe the things we believe. Responding to questions and criticism is something we all need to be ready to do if called upon. Continue reading
